BELFAST, Maine Police are trying to identify a man they believe may have intended to steal a shopping cart packed with $1,300 worth of items last weekend from the Hannaford supermarket.
Store staff contacted police to let them know that the man was acting suspiciously by loading up a cart with suspicious items, according to Chief Mike McFadden of the Belfast Police Department.
After perhaps having been tipped off by a possible accomplice to police cars waiting outside, the chief said, the man abandoned the shopping cart in the middle of the store and then hustled away with a companion.
"It became obvious to the person who was watching them that they had gotten spooked," McFadden said. "He literally urinated in his pants as he was leaving in a hurry."
No details were available about what was in the cart, other than some meat, according to the police report.
"I can only assume this was a fairly organized situation," the chief said. "Due to the nature and organization of his actions, it leads me to believe that perhaps he had done this same kind of thing elsewhere."
After the man left, store staff rang up the contents of the shopping cart and came up with the monetary value of the items.
"I don't even know that at this point we can say he was doing anything wrong," McFadden said. "It was pretty suspicious and didn't make much sense."
The man is wanted for questioning, he said, and the Belfast Police Department posted a securitycamera photograph of him on its Facebook page. By noon on Thursday, it had been shared 118 times.
